CHICAGO RIVER
Every March a plumbers' union turns the Chicago River green. It started in 1961, when a plumber's overalls came back green from the dye he used to trace leaks. Mayor Daley wanted Lake Michigan. They settled for the river. The first year took about 100 pounds of dye. Today it's about 40.
