BROOD XIII · MAY AND JUNE 2024

In May and June of 2024, Northern Illinois got loud. Brood XIII came up after 17 years underground, in the same year as Brood XIX for the first time since 1803. A single acre can hold over a million cicadas, and the chorus can reach up to 100 decibels. The next Brood XIII is 2041.

On the shirt: one periodical cicada, drawn the way a field guide draws one, across the front in Lemont Stone line, with the eyes and the leading wing vein picked out in Field Corn. It is captioned BROOD XIII, with May and June 2024 and 17 years underground. At the back of the collar, a tiny line reads NEXT BROOD XIII · 2041, with a small Mayvick name above it, both printed tone on tone. The Mayvick two-bar mark, two short slanted bars leaning in together, is printed tone on tone on the left sleeve.
