SWALLOW CLIFF · STAFF PICK
The original staircase at Swallow Cliff has 125 limestone steps up a 100-foot bluff in Palos Park. Runners treat it like a gym. A second flight added in 2016 stretches the loop to 293. Count the first 125 on the way up.
Long before the runners showed up, these steps were how you got a toboggan to the top. Families climbed them all winter for a few fast seconds back down. The slides closed in 2004 and came down in 2008, but the bluff still turns into a sledding hill when the snow comes. The hill itself is older than any of it: glacial meltwater carved the Sag Valley about 12,000 years ago.
A side view of the staircase, drawn for Mayvick, climbs diagonally across the back, each drawn tread standing for five of the 125 steps, with a 100-foot bluff marker and the line COUNT THE FIRST 125 ON THE WAY UP.
