The tower was finished in 1869. The 1871 fire burned about a third of the city and left it standing. Oscar Wilde called it a "castellated monstrosity." Chicago kept it anyway, and in 1918 bent Michigan Avenue around it.

On the shirt: the tower drawn tall up the back, with WATER TOWER and CHICAGO · BUILT 1869 · STILL STANDING AFTER 1871 running up the left side, a gold sun off to the right and the Wilde line at the foot. A small tower printed at the left chest.
