There are elk in the Chicago suburbs. Busse Woods is the forest preserve in Elk Grove Village, out by O'Hare, and the herd goes back to 1925, nine cows and one bull shipped by train from Yellowstone. It still grazes a 17-acre pasture off Higgins Road, and everyone who grew up nearby has pulled over to look. Local lore says the elk were here first and the groves were called Wapiti before settlers came. Take that one as legend. The herd is on record, and so is the town's name.
