One letter to the editor started a 61-mile trail

In 1963 a naturalist at the Morton Arboretum named May Theilgaard Watts wrote to the Chicago Tribune with a question. The Chicago Aurora and Elgin rail line, nicknamed the Roarin' Elgin, had stopped carrying passengers in 1957. So why couldn't it become a footpath?

DuPage County bought the right-of-way in December 1965 and leased 27 miles of it in 1966. The Illinois Prairie Path became a National Recreation Trail in 1971. Today it runs 61 miles from Maywood out to Elgin and Aurora, with Wheaton as the hub.

This is the Prairie Path tee, and it also comes as a crewneck.
